Church Profile
Church background, current situation, and future:
The church was founded in 1957, twelve years after the end of World War II. During those years no English-language Baptist churches existed to serve the U.S. military forces remaining in postwar Germany. Immanuel was founded in order to meet that need.
As a young, growing church Immanuel often shifted locations seeking more space for classrooms and parking. The congregation needed a building of its own. The people gave sacrificially, but credit was limited with construction costs rapidly rising.
A German Baptist congregation faced similar problems, so God brought us together. In 1973 the two congregations jointly built a permanent facility. What a blessing in fellowship and efficiency which continues today!
In l992, the U.S. military began minimizing its presence in Europe. Consequently, the church refocused its vision and has become a diverse international congregation, which still includes US military. In the next few years, this military population is set to grow considerably.
We currently average approx. 80 in Sunday worship service, with approx. 40 in Sunday School (from babies and toddlers through children and youth to adults). Other ministries include men, women’s, youth and children’s ministries and active missions involvement.
The congregation is made up of those who live permanently or long-term in the Wiesbaden area and those who are here short-term which can range from people on business trips for a week to those who are here for two or three years with the US military or international companies, as well as students and refugees. There are approx. 20 nationalities represented. It is a young congregation with a large number of young adults and young families. English is not the mother tongue for many but it is the language they feel comfortable in for church life.
The church currently has six deacons. Leadership is also given by the Church Council (made up of ministry leaders) which meets quarterly and significant decisions are brought to the church membership at business meetings (held at least quarterly). For more information on the organization and structure of the church, please see the Constitution and By-Laws.
The last full-time pastor left in March 2007. Since then the church has had several interim pastors. Due to a tax issue that required the church to pay back taxes, we have not been in a financial position to hire a full-time pastor during these last two years as we have been paying off the loan provided by the International Baptist Convention.
Immanuel Baptist Church is the founding member church of the International Baptist Convention and continues to be actively involved in and supportive of the ministry of the Convention. The church is also involved in the German Baptist Union.
